Tuesday we took the grandkids to Avery Island to see the jungle gardens and the tabasco bottling plant. Avery Island is a hill of land pushed up by a salt dome in the marsh South of New Iberia,La. It became the first rock salt mine in North America in 1862 when salt was found just 16 feet below the surface. The jungle garden was created over a hundred years ago with azaleas, camellias, wisteria, bamboo, and many native plants.
Most of the plants had finished blooming, but the spring foliage was beautiful after an overnight rain. Resurrection ferns and spanish moss cover the live oak trees. The children especially liked the alligators basking in the sun and the Snowy Egret nesting colony, which was created to save them from extinction.
There is also a 900 year old metal Buddha statue in its shrine situated over its reflecting pond.

That's pretty cool Gary, I've heard all about Avery island but never actually been. We used to come close to it coming in from offshore and I got to see the pink spoonbills and what we thought were flamingos but I've been told that they weren't ??

Very nice place and next time we go down to see my DH's bro we will have to check it out. Those gators look hungry! Love the pond photo's w/ the bridge and the one w/ the shrine. Neat seeing all the nesting Snowy Egrets. We have trumpeter swans here right now all over the farmers fields.

I cleaned my pond up today by removing a lot of the creeping vines and cut them off so they can grow again. Now the pond is pretty open to the eyes of the heron and hope I don't get a visit. I still have the radio by the pond on loud to come on auto in the dawn and off and dusk so hoping that will discourage him!

I still have the liner floating, the fish love the hiding spot. Once the lilies really take off I will be pulling it for the summer.
