I just personally feel that social media takes away independent thinking in kids. It seems they almost develop a herd mentality, it's a shame really as I've I have met some very smart kids with great grades, but at fifteen years of age some of these kids find it hard to make any small decision by themselves. I suppose the internet has to have the bad as well as the good, but it's the bad that concerns me. I can say I was relieved my son when in 7th grade did not have a fancy phone a few years ago, as a young girl in his school who had just turned 14 sent a nude photo of herself to a kid in 9th grade. Needless to say that kids friend copied it, and sent it on to others. My son saw it on his friends phone, but the bottom line is I was grateful my son did not have a phone able to receive downloads, as some of those boys got in a lot of trouble, the law now is no matter how old those boys were, sending that picture on to their friends is distribution and a crime. The girls family tried to sue the first boys parents, the whole thing was messy and expensive for two family's , all because of popular trends on social media. Regardless of my kids thinking they should have free access to the internet, it won't be happening just yet.
