Hi, my pond is about 1000 gallons and sits in the hot Florida sun all day long on my screened in patio. I now have hornwort in the left half of the pond and a lily plant there as well. (The picture was taken prior to the hornwort growth spurt!) My hornwort has grown tremendously since last fall and does the best throughout the winter and spring months when the temperatures here are around 50 - 60 degrees. Now that we are in the 90's, the hornwort just starts to turn brown and disintegrate. It makes a giant mess of the pump/filter. Does anyone have any ideas of what else to use for shading of the pond. Without some type of shade my poor fish will boil in the hot sun! I tried umbrellas but that was just tacky looking! I've tried other plants like water lettuce and it too just turns yellow and mushes away! Without the hornwort, all of the fish just sit under the bridge in the shade and I really want them to be able to swim about. It stays really hot here now through October so I really need to shade at least some of the pond. Thanks!

Christine

I love that room :) How would you feel about rigging a sail shade. Misters come to mind but you may not want to use them in there.

Hi
Is getting direct sun light as to say is this patio have a solid roof or is it screened also.
If it is not getting direct sun light then more then likley it is getting warm/hot from the hot air and humidity IE Florida :bye2:

So if it is not direct sun light then a shade will do no good.

What is the temp of the pond ?

If it is getting over 80 D then you could have a problem.

If you have a breeze threw there you can run a pimp with a fouantain tip as the air blows threw it will cool the water.

Yes, the roof is screened as well so it gets direct sun all day long. Right now the water is about 73 degrees. The fish tend to stay under the hornwort or the bridge and stay down low in the heat of the summer. I like your idea of a fountain to cool down the water. Thanks!

73 degrees? Wow wish my ponds were that cool, It's midnight and both my ponds are still over 90! One is 80% shaded by a tarp to help cool it keep the algae under control. and Tacky, OH YEA it's tacky, but the water is clear.

Our pond is in full sun all day. We built an arbor over our pond and put lattice on top so some sun could come through for the plants to stay alive. Also have lilies, the pads help cover the surface and keep the water cool.

I get full sun since my neighbours decided to cut down a load of trees. Recently i've built a pergolia and am in the process of training some rose bushes up it.
Very nice pond btw
