Yep, sorta related somewhere on here is an article on how goldfish can survive being actually frozen in ice, think Mitchm posted it years ago. Think it has something to do with producing more glycogen(probably not remembering this right) in there blood and tissues that keeps them from being damaged during this period.

He was so helpful when we were just getting into this pond hobby - his knowledge far superseded mine - but he was also patient with explaining thing so this newbie could grasp the concepts.
