Hello.

I'm new to this website, I joined to get some advice from experienced koi keepers regarding my koi.

I've had these kois for about 4-6 years and never had a problem.

End of summer 2013 around September I bought 6 koi carps.

One of the koi carp sits at the bottom of the pond possible on its side and doesn't move, Everytime I catch it to see what's happening it moves and swims and then after a while goes to the bottom and plays dead again.

My water reading are perfect. I will try to show you guys the reading.

Any ideas what's up? All the other 15 kois are okay. Parked up in the deepend of the pond for winter.

Here are a couple of pictures, there seems to be no obvious problem.

Please help.

welcome how cold is your water as they could be in winter mode .Did you allow the new fish time to acclimate to the water and how long after you got them did you introduce them to the pond .

Welcome to the site. Could you share a few more details like the size of your pond, filtration, did you quarantine the new fish prior to placing them in the pond…..I think we could give you better advice with more information? Kim

Hi and Welcome, I note that your from the UK, so are we,we live in sunny Plymouth
Koi are our area weve been keeping them for almost 27 years now .
Firstly plese can you give me some details about your pond, its size gallonage etc.
Next what filtration you have on the pond and what are your maintenance routines for the pond i;e partial water changes which should be done on a regular basis, how many times do you do maintenance on your fltration per year, do you have a bottom drain etc.
I'll need all of your water perameters i;e Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite, Ph, Gh and Kh these are vitally important.
These new koi, how long did you have them in Quarentine indeed do you have a QT pond or tank?
The answer to this last question is vitally important because without QTing your koi you are playing a game of Russian Roulette, they should spend between 4 to 6 weeks before meeting the existing koi.
Did you buy your koi from either a koi dealer or garden centre , why ? because garden centres though they are OATA qualified it isnt really a specialist qualification which your koi dealer has, plus they are looking after many other fish including koi not straight koi like a koi dealer and as such can miss things.
Have you ever read up on koi either online or books, Why ? some information online is totally wrong and dangerous information books on the other hand at the time of ublishing are and have to be correct.
What do you use to take the chlorie out of the water i;e dechlorinator or a dechlorination unit ?
I you do neither the please start if you dont have a dechlorination unit do yourself a favour buy one , I'll post the link to where we got ours from, dechlorinator is expensive and a bit hit and miss with a unit you can dechlorinnate upwards of 100.000 imperial gallons before you buy recharges for the unit so it makes sense to use one see link of the one we use (cartridge refills cost £5.00) :-

We hope this will help you
Question was the round green thing on your fishes gills attached or is it fish detritus?
Please check this because if its anchorworm you'll need to go about irradicating it from your pond
