Hey everyone!

I've largely been a stalker on this site for the last 2 months as i've been planning and building my first pond, and i've learned TONS, so thank you! A few stats on the pond before I give you the sordid details:

It's a small setup - I think around 500 gallons not including the bog area (note to self, calculate your gallons, girlfriend!). Lower pond is a preformed unit around 18" deep that I already owned. An overpowered (compared to what i'm used to) Laguna 2900 pumps water up to a bog area thats around 4x4 x 12" deep. There's a small waterfall to a middle pond area (for now, this will be for lillies and plants) that's 16" deep and approximately 7 x 5. Then another waterfall back down to the pre-fabbed unit.

The story begins earlier this summer, when I purchased my new home. My old home had a small preformed unit -- I wasn't the one who installed it -- but you can bet I took it with me when I moved ;). At the new house, I was on a time-crunch to get the fishies (15 feeder goldfish I've had for a few years) into the ground so they would have a place to spend the winter - for the months of June, July and August, I had them hanging out in a whiskey barrel on my back patio). My new house is less than a mile from my old house and the little guys did well every winter for the past 3 years, including snowmageddon, in just 16" of water here in 7a - I plan to go deeper once I "redo everything" but I'm hopeful this setup will tide them over for a year or two.

My new setup was sort of a rush job, lol. Money is tight while I get used to the new mortgage, and the only rocks I used were ones I brought with me from the old house (moving those from old house to new was NOT FUN. Then again, moving in general is definitely NOT FUN, lol!). I bought a 10 x 15 EPDM liner from Amazon using my Discover card points with free shipping (yay!) and got a good deal on the laguna pump online.

Because my yard has a slope away from the house, and I didn't have a good supply of river rock at my disposal, I decided to go with a build technique I found online called the raised edge method. I didn't have to do a whole lot of digging, and what dirt I did dig out, went right into the surrounding berms for planting beds, so not a lot of waste. Not sure how it will hold up long term, but for now, it seems to be holding my liner in place nicely. I'm hiding the liner using Rock on a Roll (i'm not affilliated with the company in any way, just a happy customer, so far!). I'm not crazy about the horizontal line I have showing around the top edge of everything, hopefully once the plants grow in, it won't be as apparent.

Here's a few pics (these pics are a few weeks old, it's changed a little bit since then, and will likely continue to change ;)):
2013-08-26 19.02.10.jpg2013-08-26 19.03.01.jpg2013-08-26 19.03.28.jpg2013-08-26 19.20.52.jpg

So, the system holds water, no leaks to speak of, and there's been all sorts of tweaking going on. On the agenda for this week is to bury PVC into the bog (yeah, should have done that before putting in the gravel, but meh :alieneyesa:), continue hunting for better waterfall stones (right now I'm using slate that I happened to have on hand, but i'm still not happy with how they have turned out), more rocks to hide the liner and the raised edge. Oh, and plants!

So far, i have parrots feather, anacharis, and some rushes in the pond proper, and a few creeping jennies in the bog. I didn't get floaters this year with all the craziness of the move, so fishies will have to do without until spring. I am soooooo impatient and want to add more to the bog, but i'm worried they won't have time to establish themselves before winter. Do you all think it's too late in the season to add any bog plants? I plan to shut down the pump to the bog over winter, so it more than likely will freeze.

The main reason I'm here is to help plan for expansion! Long term, i'd like to move the preformed liner to the front yard and in the back, go bigger and deeper on the lower pond! Of course, a few things need to happen first - I may need to put a fence around my property - not sure if a pond counts as a pool, but if so, then county regs say I need one for anything deeper than 18". My house backs to a forest (note to self - raccoon-proof the new setup) and we don't have any little ones to worry about, so I have some research and question-asking ahead of me. I also need to get a supply of big-daddy, grown-up rocks to match my big-daddy grown-up pump (I used to have a teeny tiny fountain spitter in my old setup, so having this laguna makes me feel like an adult, lol!). And, of course I need to plan, plan, plan!

Anywho, Just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and ask a question or two! Looking forward to continuing to absorb tons of info, and maybe even being able to contribute a little bit! ;)

Kindest regards,
Michele

Welcome to our group from a marylander.......

Like your preform install, looks great. If you want to make it less preformy, take rocks right up to the edge, different sizes shapes, some just to the edge some over the edge, that will blend it in. (BTW I love Rockon the roll, works great)
I have added pieces of root, plants etc since this picture, hardly can tell it is a preform now. If I get off my butt I will go out and take a fresh picture for you. The water from the big pond feeds the preforms.

I put a lot of small bog plants in the my bog in the fall, around october, they did fine over the winter and really took off in the spring. We are a little colder than you, around 6b or so.
We have raccoons, so far they have never bothered my pond. Just the darn herons.

We did not fence our pond, but it is 100 plus yards from any other property, we are pretty rural.

If you need any plants I can give you some, mine are growing like weeds. Spring is the best when they are smaller, right now tall and growing well.

I think next year I will bring my lilies up closer to the surface .I got pads but no flowers this year ,but the pads are pretty .Darn morning glories rooted them selves there and have to pull them so fish don't eat the seeds and die .

Hey Addy! I read your entire build thread from start to finish, HOLY COW, you have done beautiful and amazing things! Your preform pictures are a complete inspiration! What sort of rock did you use? I'm struggling to find some down here, but admittedly haven't really checked more than HD, Lowes, and a local nursery. Found some beautiful stepping stones that I think would work, but they are made of sandstone and I think that may be a nono. Where did you get your rocks from, if I may ask?

Your offer to share your plants with me is incredibly generous and I would love anything you can spare! I'm down in Silver Spring, and in fact I used to live up in Frederick (Urbana, actually), so you're kind of in my old stomping ground! One of these weekends I was going to take a trip up to Lilypons, but was holding out to see if they put their lilies on sale before deciding on an exact date. After all, this gal is on a budget. Which is funny, because I seem to be spending moolah on little incidentals more and more. Plants, PVC pipe, soil, mulch, gravel, doodads and trinkets... :salook:

LOL, Sissy! I'm the same way! While we were still in the digging phase, the "aerial view" of the pond (ie, from my 2nd story deck) looked like an upside down Gonzo from the muppets, crooked nose and everything!

Then again, the non-preformed part kind of looks like a footprint without any toes.... :nananananana:

don't buy lilies I will be dividing mine this fall, you can have a bunch. I went to lilypons, they were not cheap, and I am a cheapie.
I was raised in rockville, so you are in my childhood stomping grounds, moved to arizona then moved back here.

I picked up pallets of rock from meadow farms nursery, a field stone (was on sale), river rock, pallets of field stone and pea gravel from Irwin stone (they have a real nice selection) I think there is a Irwin stone near you. Actually right in rockville, http://www.irwinstone.com/
The rocks were one of my big expenses, I think I bought overall 6 pallets. The field stone worked the best for me, flat and stacks great.
Our rock out here is shale, it sucks, becomes dirt once exposed to weather and air.

Oh, MeadowFarms is the local place I checked out! They had a few different pallets of stuff (wallstone -- not sure what kind of rock that is, lol), bluestone, and something else, but I asked the gal there what she thought would be good (and safe) for a pond and she kinda had no idea :banghead3: . They had open pallets with HUUUUUUUGE chunks of stuff, but nothing I could squeeze into my tiny little pond, or my tiny little car, and all of the smaller sizes were totally picked through. I do know where Irwin is, next time I have to trek out to Rockville to pick up my "gourmet" cat food, I'll stop in! I'm not ready to buy pallets yet (I need a break, lol!) but maybe I can get ideas and also buy some rock a-la-carte if they have any open pallets- I still need to fix my waterfalls!

You are a wealth of information (you and Sissy both, actually!) and I'm sooooooo happy you're local! I've been in MoCo most of my life (save for the brief stint in Urbana). Grew up in Olney (where my parents still reside), bounced around to Rockville, Aspen Hill, Germantown, Bethesda, and now Silver Spring. After the month-long nightmare moving experience we just had, they will have to carry me out in a pine box ;)

Thank you thank you for your suggestions!!!

Irwin has open piles you can pick through, last time I went and got 5 large flat stones for water fall stones. For the shubbie tank, cost me a whole 15 bucks. They were almost to large for me to pick up, around 3x2 feet, heavy and awkward, of course didn't even think to wait, one of the guys ran over as I was tossing the last rock into the car to do it for me.

I like your pond set up. I do need to tell you if you haven't figured it out already ponds are very addictive. You will always be out there changing things, loving it deciding to do this or that different. You have began a very enjoyable hobby. Sometime a big headache, but worth it.

I am new on here also and will get some of my pond pictures posted.
