My alita 40 has taken to stopping and starting intermittently. The troubleshooting section of the manual suggests overheating. But it is outside in fresh air. I have cut down from 3 to 1 stone and it still keeps happening. Does anyone recognise this problem; also my pond is 1200 gallons -7ft diameter and 4 foot deep. I am worried about the oxygen levels while I find a fix. How do i know if the oxygen levels are too low and causing problems?

Question is how many fish and do you have any other sources of oxigenation like a water fall. I have 5 koi in 1000 and my air pump has been down for a week but I have a water fall going into it. So far they seem well oxegenated will have a replacement air pump on wed

  • You can get an O2 test kit if you want to monitor it.
    • Observe your fish, If they normally hang at the bottom (unless you are feeding) and have taken to staying near the surface, they more then likely are doing so for lack of o2 near the bottom.
    • If you don't have a waterfall or other water feature that aerates, use an inexpensive submergeable pump to agitate the water surface
    • If the pump has a venturi option, use it. If not you can easily make one with vinyl tubing the diameter of the pumps output and a smaller diameter tubing.

Alita's are very solid pumps, and perhaps it's time you change out the diaphram. You don't mention how old the pump is or when/if you've changed out the diaphram, but it could be that. It's a pretty common repair, and any pump with a diaphram on average needs to be replaced every 1-2 years. Though I've had air pumps where the diaphram went 4 years with no trouble.

Google the Alita diaphram and get the parts, and hopefully that will be an easy/quick fix to your problem.
