I read it's good and bad, should I keep some or get rid of it all?
I was able to get some iris from another ponder, he gave me some algae and said it is good, it is starting to spread.

If it's string algae then get yourself some algaecide. It's spendy but it wipes out the string algae while not harming the fish. The only problem I have is dealing with the solids after the kill off...they turn to a green snot. It's the only stuff I've found that will control it.

Definitely string algae. Don't use algaecide, it will kill your other plants as well. Just put your hand down there and pull most of it out. If you have fish they like to hide in it and eat it to. I believe DrDave can attest to that....

I don't know about the rest of you but this just isn't possible for me...without the algaecide I am pulling a wheelbarrow load every other day...the stuff completely clogs my two streams too with water running through them like a slough. My lily's, Lotus, cat tail, etc., haven't even noticed when it was being used.

I don't like it but I really have no other choice.

Hi Jerry, You probably won't have any problems keeping some of it because it's impossible to get all of it by pulling.

Since I've joined here and done reading of multiple posts I have become a convert that leaving this, to a certain extent, in the fish environment for the purposes you have stated is a good idea. I have also come to the conclusion that I will not use AlgaeFix any longer with the exception of limited use to the streams and then only to keep them clear and running.

My adoptees from last fall graze the algae just like cows and now they haven't got much since I decimated it all with algaefix. I'm going to do what Dave said, pull out the excessive amounts in the spring by hand and let the fish have the rest for their environment.

If the stuff continues to reproduce out of hand then you have an issue with your water/temp/light situation which will need to be addressed in another way. BC
