Hi everyone,

I’m after some general advice and help, I’ve inherited a neglected koi pond. I’ve been looking after the pond for about 6 months now and I’ve seen some improvement with water clarity it’s still no way near perfect as there’s still a green tint “pea soup” and a bit of sludge build up.

Currently have 3 Koi Carp in a 6000 litre pond.

What I’ve done so far;

- Changed the UVC bulb as it had been 6-9 months since last done.

- Tested my water quality Ph - 7.5, No3 - 0, No2 - 0, Nh3 - 0, gH - 4ppm, kH - 4ppm.

- Added gH and KH buffers as tests were low. (3 days ago added)

- Rinse Filter sponges weekly.

- Added sludge remover enzymes. (3 days ago added)

- 15/20% water changes every 2 weeks.

- Added some aquatic plants to improve oxygen levels. (3 days ago added)

I understand that what I’ve recently added to the pond won’t happen over night and it can take a few weeks to see some results, but I guess I just want to know if I’m missing something or I’m just being impatient lol

Any help or advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks
Dylan

Don't add sludge remover, it doesn't remove anything. You're just adding chemicals to your pond. You only need to rinse filter sponges when water flow decreases, then you might need to do it daily depending. Anyway, don't do it on schedule, do it on need.

If you want to clear the green, you need mechanical filtration and water flow. The filter will sieve out the green stuff.

You are indeed being impatient. One thing I think pond keepers have come to understand - those once "necessary" water changes aren't helping at all. Let your water mature. Every time you add more water - especially at the volume you are adding - you upset the balance and throw yourself back to the beginning. Stop adding ANYTHING . Just wait.

Adding chemicals just can make things worse IMO!

Thanks for the advice everyone, I’ll just leave the pond alone for a bit now and hopefully I’ll see the improvements.

If you DON'T see improvements, continue to focus on the three elements of the pond - the water, the plants and the fish. Do you have enough plants? Do you have too many fish? Are you overfeeding? How's the water chemistry? Those are the adjustments you need to think about before buying a "solution" that will just chase the symptoms.

Yes, be patient. As long as the fish are not sick, leave it alone except normal filter and water top up. It may take as long as a year for it to reach equilibrium, and clear up, then it will never get cloudy again (maybe). clean the filter as needed, don't over feed, have plenty of voracious plants, (those that like lots of "fertilizer").
You may get an algae "bloom" in early spring before the plants wake up fully and start to eat. But that should clear up on it's own in a short time.

Currently have 3 Koi Carp in a 6000 litre pond.

- Rinse Filter sponges weekly. You should clean at max all but one filter leaving bacteria to reseed the other filters

Any help or advice will be much appreciated . What is your filter system , how many fish, and gallons ?

Thanks
Dylan

Don't add chemicals there is n real need for them .One thing you do not mention is temperature of the water . That is important also .
