One pond for the lilies, one pond for the Koi. The larger the koi the more they will destroy plants. I found if you place to large of rocks on the top of the pot, too large for them to pick up they don't dig in the pots as much. Stopping them from stripping the leaves is a whole new issue to have to over come.

my koi decided they liked the pulp in the stems of the lillies...they'd bite them off as close to the rhyzone as possible and suck the pulp out. i pulled out probably not far from 100 pads with the stems over a couple weeks and the bottom 3" or so of the stems were empty .(all of them)

You need to cage the plants, with netting etc. The koi love to eat them.

I tried caging my plants and does not work as they push the top down then get stuck in netting .I tried it but kept a close eye on them and they just all swarmed around it trying to get at it until one of them started to push the top down and got inside the netting and I had to rescue him and sigh had to take the plant out

I have never been able to. Once the figure they are a food source its "All u can eat 24/7" with plants of any kind. I keep mine in a seperate area that the koi cant get into. I have though about doing a screened area but am affraid of my fish getting stuck in whatever I try to do. My future plans call for a seperate smaller pond for my lillies that only has goldfish in it.

Or like some do have a separate plant pond, let the floaters grow, parrots feather etc and when you have extra throw to the fish pond for the koi to snack on, a treat!
