I have always had the piping where it leaves the filter then splits one going to the waterfall and the other going back into the pond roughly half way down. I opened the valve again and noticed the kids are in the water flow and not just sitting on the bottom. Is this water flow ok for them or should they be sitting on the bottom. I like that they are being active even with the colder water temps.

My fishes get real active anytime there is added flow to the pond. Even in the cold.

Supposedly, which I have not read anything that verifies it, when the water is so cold that it puts the fish into a state of torpar, then a high flow "supposedly can hurt the fish". What ailments occur as a result of this? I haven't read any yet...
Koi actually love the water currents and they make no attempts at avoiding it. I have read many threads of folk building ponds in a stream/river flow design and the fish are constantly swimming in the heavy current end of the pond. These currents are often created by pond returns pushing up to as much as 20,000gph or more.
Could it be more of an instinct thing and this is why they go into the currents?? It could be... I don't have intimate knowledge of their instincts so I have no idea.
To me, it appears they are definitely looking forward to enjoy the water movement.

my temps are not as cold and water at bottom right now is 55 and top is at around 40 degrees and since it was built not far from septic tank bottom gets heat from that so it is usually a lot warmer .gold fish seem to love flow of water but aggie and bert (koi ))seem to like the aerator bubbles on there bodies rather than the stream of water .I guess it is like a nice bubble bath to them .

When i add a new source of water flow to the pond ie garden hose or such, it would be crazy for me to think that i wouldn't have the koi swimming up against it, even in cooler temps. This is just your koi having a little exercise, and is healthy for them as well! Good questions though....

Kougs, I looked up your weather and I don't think your even cold with daytime temperatures in the 50's and no hard freeze at all in your forecast. Your ground is probally not froze either, and I suspect that your pond is not that cold so they don't need to sit on the bottom. I also don't think you even have or had any ice on your pond recently, so the fish are just fine, and not really that cold, so not to worry, all is fine I am sure! :)

same thing here lots of rain and mild so fish have been mostly active all winter .I have only had one fish that stays near the bottom all the time and that is one of my fat fantails ,but he even does that some of the times in the summer .I think he is mad at me because he used to love to come up and eat and get a belly rub .He used to swim into my hand to get a rub and not sure what I did to him to make him mad .oh well he will get over it I guess .

You are same weather as me here koug's and my goldfish just love the water flow all year round. They are seen at times under the falls for a ride into the turbulence and other times they choose the calmer quieter waters at the other end of the pond. No ill effects that I can see

My 250 Gallon Pond had a 250GPH pump for the Spitter, 650GPH pump for top tier water fall and Fountain Nozzle split, 420GPH pump for the Sides of the Waterfall Fountain, and another 250GPH for an Irrigation Filter. I was turning my pond almost 6-1/2 times an hour, The Fish LOVED it to say the Least, and there were still spots where they could just sit idle and chill! :goldfish:

Yes good job Jason! Fish still need water circulation all year to prevent the water from going stale. Even here in the far north my pond still has circulation and the main pumps never ever shut down, just the spitters and extra summer flow gets shut off. A bubbler also works for lots of people.

I've noticed that even with the waterfall churning the edge of my pond, most of the water flow seems to stay near the top. When its really cold, my fish will stay at the bottom and barely move, but once the sun hits them, they'll be up in the moving water. Then again, this is also true during times when the pond is frozen over... I can see the water moving just under the surface of the ice, but I can also see the fish simming around right under the ice. So is it a temperature thing, or the fact that the ice hides them from predators?

And if you really want to see something funny, my rosy minnows try to spawn up the face of the waterfall in the Spring! Sometimes you'll see one make it to one of the ledges, and he'll flop around for a few seconds before falling back down into the pond. I keep expecting to see some of the bigger fish trying to make the leap!
