I came across this guy in my YouTube suggestions and have enjoyed watching him. He is in the UK and from what I understand, mosquitos are not as much of an issue there the way they are in the US. (UK pond group members - is this true?) They are able to build small wildlife ponds with still water without the problems that we have in our part of the world.
Although these ponds wouldn't work in my yard, I have had a lot of fun watching him build them. He excavates and puts in liner and underlay - then returns subsoil to the hole and shelves. The sub soil (unlike nutrient-rich topsoil) is a good growing medium for plants but has less "good stuff" in it and doesn't foul the water.
I just wanted to recommend his videos - it's fun to see something a little different!
