I'm a project manager for this project at work, part of the project is reconstructing a silty stagnant public pond. The pond has too much surface area and the temps fluctuate too much being fed only by surface water and the top horizon of seasonal ground water mostly trapped by compacting poorly draining soil at the bottom "bottom"... it's a crummy liner. We're reducing the surface area by 40,000 square feet (40%) and going 10+ feet deep to feed it from ground water, no liner. For years the City of Taunton supplied City water. It's a very complicated project with a groundwater connected wetland we're going to control with a tide gate/flapper valve on a huge pipe between the pond and wetland to control flooding at the adjacent Flannery Playground. We're going through all the permitting MEPA, DEP, the whole deal.
We've done a few of these here in CT, one of the more popular ones is Rockwell Park in Bristol CT. It used to be a popular swimming spot in the 1920's with a field stone bath house etc but water supply has changed. We cut the surface area in half and deepened it. The other side we created a wetland with boardwalks etc. https://bristolct.myrec.com/info/facilities/details.aspx?FacilityID=13347. We earned a CT ASLA Merritt Award for it in 2011, I helped with design and construction documents.
