The river still needs some work, but is coming along nicely.

The gradual drop from shallow to deep makes for easy access, but also has a nice natural feel to it as well. The kids like wading and looking at frogs.

The falls are pretty well coated with algae now, which I think actually makes the water run faster and fall nicer.

Originally I thought I could avoid the typical rock-lined pond look, but soon realized it was just going to be impossible to maintain the pond edge without them. I found a place that delivered a cheap rip-rap mix, but had to do a lot of sorting.

Hyacinth blooming. This was the only one that bloomed, and it was very short lived.

We added a couple of gold fish to start, then a couple of small koi, and then a bunch more goldfish. I don't want to invest too much yet in case they don't make it through the winter.

Some friends bought us a lily as a pond-warming gift. The frogs seem to like it.

I found some flat rocks and arranged them to create an adequate waterfall. Hopefully I can rip this stuff out in the future in case I find something better.

I dug up some plants from the real bog near our property and added them to the bog area.

Not sure if I did the bog right, but basically just ended the host in the bottom, added some large base rocks, re-used a bunch of landscape rock for a middle layer, and then added pea gravel for the top layer.

The first real expense was a 45 mil liner from pondliner.com.

Did some dumpster diving for carpet remnants to create a nice soft base for the liner.

I'm able to quickly add another 8-12 inches to the back wall.

Probably not the best fill material, buy my friend had all the manure I could use and it was free!

Didn't get all of the digging done before winter, spring thaw reveals need for a much higher back wall.

This area used to be a vegetable garden, fairly significant slope. Goal is to just use cut and fill to create natural earthen berm.

Original concept. My wife does photography and wanted good angles/props, including a dock for kids to dangle their feet from.
